Selling your used textbooks can be done in a variety of ways. A large amount of students just sell their used textbooks back to their campus but in general they don’t get near their true value by doing this. Some “wiser” students sell their textbooks on websites like half.com or amazon.com where they can usually get a little more money then they could from their school however they have to pay fees and a percentage of the price to either amazon or ebay.

So this leads a lot of students to try and sell their textbooks on the popular website craiglist. This seems like a good idea since craiglist is free and it’s pretty easy to use. However there are a few problems with trying to sell your college textbooks on craiglist.

Craiglist isn’t built for textbooks

Selling a textbook on craigslist is hard since most people who are using craigslist aren’t searching for textbooks.  This leads to your ad likely falling to deep pages on the website and likely expiring before anyone is interested in purchasing the book.  Also it’s harder to search for the textbook as you only have one search option using keywords where some students search by isbn numbers, author, ect.  This could potentially lead to buyer not being able to find your book when they are truly interested in purchasing it.

Craigslist Scammers

Another problem with craigslist is that it is rampant with scammers.  Craigslist is notorious for the amount of scammers who use the website.  That’s why it’s imperative to not agree to any shipping or 3rd party purchase arrangements with someone who contacts you via craiglist.

Limited Market

Craiglist only allows you to search for products or books in your local area.  If you have books which aren’t in extremely high demand chances are the ad will expire before someone in your city or town is looking for that specific textbook.

So students are in a tough spot.  Either sell your book for less than it’s worth to a your campus bookstore or pay fees to sell it on a website like ebay or amazon.

Are sites such as Amazon and EBay not allowing you to sell your old books because they are too out of date? I recently read about an individual who had an old textbook (from 2008) that they tried selling to Amazon and they wouldn’t buy it because of this sole reason.
